How much does sheet metal fabrication cost?

Short answer: the price of a sheet metal part is built from six blocks: material and nesting, cutting, bending, welding, finishing, hardware and assembly. A simple cut and bent part sells for €3 to €6 per kilo, a welded and coated part €6 to €14, complex or stainless work €14 to €25 and more (source: QuoteBuddy).

How is the price of a sheet metal part calculated?

Material = blank area ÷ nesting yield × sheet price
Cutting = cut and pierce time × laser hourly rate
Bending = number of bends and handling × press brake hourly rate
Welding and finishing = weld time × hourly rate + coated area × price per m²
Setups = setup time of each machine ÷ batch size
Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin)

A six-block part can carry four or five separate setups, each spread over the batch. That is why the unit price drops fast as quantity rises.

What published benchmarks for sheet metal?

Fibre laser, fully burdened€90 to €160 per hour
Press brake, fully burdened€60 to €95 per hour
Welder hour, fully burdened€45 to €80 per hour
Powder coating, single coat€20 to €65 per m²
Simple cut and bent part€3 to €6 per kilo
Welded and coated part€6 to €14 per kilo
Complex or stainless part€14 to €25 per kilo and more

Published example: a 2 mm steel enclosure, batch of 25

QuoteBuddy prices a 2 mm steel enclosure: 0.57 m² and 8.9 kg of blanks, 78% nesting yield, 6.2 m of cut, 12 bends, 4 corner seams and 8 studs, 1.1 m² coated, 8 inserts.

ItemPer part
Material and nesting€12.00
Laser cutting€3.20
Laser setup, spread€3.60
Bending€5.00
Brake setup, spread€1.50
Welding€13.00
Powder coating€26.00
Hardware and assembly€6.40
Cost per part€70.70

With a 25% margin, the enclosure sells for about €94 each, or €10.60 per kilo. Powder coating is the largest item: 37% of cost.

What does the same enclosure cost as a one-off or in series?

Laser and brake setups weigh €127.50 for the batch. Spread over the quantity, they change the price of the same part.

QuantityCost per partPrice per part, 25% margin
1€193.10€257.47
10€78.35€104.47
25€70.70€94.27
100€66.88€89.17

RFQdecoder calculation from the published figures: laser and brake setups spread over the quantity, other items kept constant.

How can you reduce the cost?

  • Group orders: setups spread over more parts.
  • Limit the number of bends and keep a single bend radius.
  • Replace welds with tabs or rivets where strength allows.
  • Choose a standard finish: coating is often the largest item.
  • Design blanks that nest well to improve material yield.

What should you check in a quote?

  • The thickness, grade and nesting yield assumed.
  • The cutting time and number of pierces.
  • The number of bends and brake setups.
  • The welding and the coated area.
  • The batch size the setups are spread over.

Frequently asked questions

QuoteBuddy publishes €3 to €6 per kilo for a simple cut and bent part, €6 to €14 for a welded and coated part, and €14 to €25 and more for complex or stainless work.

QuoteBuddy gives €90 to €160 per hour for a fibre laser and €60 to €95 for a press brake, fully burdened 2026 costs.

QuoteBuddy gives €20 to €65 per m² for a single coat. In its enclosure example, coating weighs €26 out of €70.70 cost.

Each machine needs a setup, paid once per batch. On the enclosure published by QuoteBuddy, these setups take the cost from €70.70 at 25 parts to €193.10 for a single part, by our calculation.

Price six blocks, material, cutting, bending, welding, finishing and assembly, spread the setups over the batch, then apply the margin.
