Machine hourly rates in Europe, 2026

Short answer: a machine hourly rate adds the cost of the machine to the cost of the person running it. The second part varies widely between countries: in 2025, an hour of manufacturing labour costs €49.50 in Germany, €47.10 in France and €17.10 in Poland, against €35.00 on average in the European Union (source: Eurostat).

How is a machine hourly rate built?

Machine share = (depreciation + energy + maintenance + floor space + tooling) ÷ productive hours per year
Operator share = labour cost per hour × operators per machine
Hourly rate = machine share + operator share + overheads

The machine share depends little on the country: a machine costs roughly the same everywhere in Europe. The operator share is what makes the gap between two shops.

What the gap between countries changes on a quote

An hour of manufacturing labour costs nearly 2.9 times more in Germany than in Poland, and 1.35 times the EU average in France. On a part where the operator weighs heavily (assembly, manual welding, deburring), this gap flows almost entirely into the price. On an automatic machine running alone, it weighs much less.

How can you reduce the cost?

  • Compare built-up rates, not posted rates: same machine, same productive hours.
  • Check operators per machine: one person for two machines halves the operator share.
  • Count freight when the shop is far away: it narrows the hourly cost gap.
  • Place manual operations in shops where labour costs less.
  • Check the year of the rates: hourly cost rose 4.1% in a year in the EU.

What should you check in a quote?

  • The hourly rate of each machine used.
  • The productive hours assumed per year.
  • The number of operators per machine.
  • Whether overheads are included.
  • The year of the rates applied.
